Roof the Ruins

This project is utterly unique and the location is a secluded site on the banks of the river with a ruined Georgian mill. Our client’s ambition is to live within the ruins of the mill.

Despite the romantic setting our client has a very pragmatic approach to the brief and is fairly concise in terms of essentials for the dwelling. We are to create a four bedroomed house which can be completely separate from the other buildings on the site where she runs her educational business.

The new accommodation nestles deep within the footprint of the existing mill and has little presence above the existing walls. It is important that the striking and exceptional location is experienced throughout the proposed building and to this end we have created instances throughout the building to pause and observe the layers of our social and industrial historic landscape.
